Accounting Aid Society and United Way serving Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County via the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax site to provide no-cost tax preparation and filing services

Accounting Aid Society and United Way serving Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County via the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax site to provide no-cost tax preparation and filing services for low- and moderate-income families (households below $67,000 in annual income)

Many low-income families owe no income tax but still must file a tax return to receive refundable tax credits, including the earned income tax credit. Those who do file often seek help, which nearly always comes from a paid preparer. The cost of that help erodes the net value of refundable credits. That cost might be worth bearing if preparers helped their clients claim tax benefits that otherwise might be missed, but many don’t.

Accounting Aid Society helps taxpayers claim all tax credits and refunds due to them. Eligible households do not have to pay to have taxes prepared. Our services are available at:

Benefits to Low- and Moderate-Income Families

“In 2023, the majority in the Michigan Legislature and I quintupled the Working Families Tax Credit, which will put hundreds more dollars back in the pockets of 700,000 working families,” said Governor Whitmer. “These checks that are starting to be mailed out this week will lift tens of thousands of people out of working poverty and directly benefit half the children in Michigan by helping their moms and dads pay the bills, put food on the table, and buy school supplies. We got your back in Michigan as you work hard and support your family. Together, let’s build a brighter future and a stronger economy.”
