May’s Roads Vote Made Simple
Hear more about what recent legislation means to Michigan's transportation network, and the travelers and businesses that rely on it, from Kirk T. Steudle, director of the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The Michigan Legislature recently passed a legislative package that supplements road funding with a shift from a flat tax to a tax on fuel at the wholesale level. The legislation would also alleviate the 6-percent sales tax now charged on fuel, which does not fund roads. Another bill in the package would raise the overall sales tax from 6 to 7 percent, with the additional revenue committed to funding for schools and local government. These laws will not take effect without voter approval in a statewide election this May.
