University of Michigan’s Legendary Dr. Billy “BT” Taylor to Be Honored and Celebrated with a Community Fundraiser in Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor, MI — September 3, 2025 — In 1968, a trailblazing group of African American athletes, later known as the Mellow Men, forged a powerful brotherhood amid racial tensions, personal loss, and the pressure of the national spotlight. Among them was three-time All-American Dr. Billy “BT” Taylor, whose leadership, perseverance, and excellence helped change the face of Michigan football and left a lasting legacy in college sports history.
Fifty years later, the University of Michigan will recognize the Mellow Men during halftime at the Homecoming game against Wisconsin on Saturday, October 4, 2025. This historic tribute will honor their impact both on and off the field.
The following day, fans and community members will have the rare opportunity to meet one of the Mellow Men himself. On Sunday, October 5, 2025, from 2:00–6:00 PM, Dr. Billy Taylor will be celebrated at a special Meet & Greet and fundraiser at La Casa Cigar Lounge (3780 Jackson Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48103).
The afternoon will feature:
● Exclusive raffle prizes, including memorabilia signed by Dr. Taylor and other Michigan legends
● A silent auction of rare collector’s items
● An intimate conversation with Dr. Billy Taylor, who will share his inspirational journey of perseverance, leadership, and resilience
Proceeds from the event will support Circles Washtenaw County, a local nonprofit program of Friends In Deed that equips individuals and families with tools to break the cycle of poverty and achieve long-term financial stability.
“Circles is about building pathways to stability and success, just as Dr. Taylor and the Mellow Men built pathways for future athletes and leaders,” said Carla Wilson, Coach with Circles Washtenaw County. “This event is about honoring the past while investing in the future.”
