Representatives from Spence Brothers attended the Associated General Contractors of Michigan’s Annual Meeting in Battle Creek on Friday, February 22, 2013 to accept the prestigious 2012 Build Michigan Award for the historic renovation to The University of Michigan’s Yost Ice Arena.
The award marks Spence Brothers’ 3rd consecutive year being honored and recognized among Michigan contractors for project performance which reflects excellent management skills, project innovation, and perseverance under unusual and challenging circumstances.
The interior of the ice arena was literally gutted to the core. Then, piece by piece, Yost was reborn with a modern-day twist and appeal - one that has catapulted Yost into a limelight of its own as one of the most envied college hockey facilities in the United States. The renovations by Spence Brothers included replacing the majority of spectator seating and improvements to the east and west concourses. Additionally, transparent windows replaced the old boarded up windows. The window replacement involved a historic renovation which significantly enhanced the exterior of the building. A level-four media balcony was converted into a series of luxury boxes and a new level of seating on the arena’s west side was created for the media. Corner platforms were also added for more seating which became the best seats in the house.
Originally built in 1923 as a field house at The University of Michigan, the Yost facility is named in honor Michigan’s legendary football coach and athletic director, Fielding H. Yost. Historically, Yost hosted the University’s Men’s and Women’s basketball before the completion of Crisler Arena in 1967. In 1973, Yost was converted into an ice arena, and the Michigan hockey team has used it ever since as home ice.
