You don't normally hear the words "smoking hot" when referring to a symphony orchestra concert, but when you've invited GEMINI to perform with you - twin-brother musicians Sandor and Laszlo Slomovits - it's a perfectly normal pairing. This dynamic duo, who will take the stage once again with the Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra (YSO) on Sunday, February 19th, combines uncannily matched voices with wonderful musicianship on nearly a dozen instruments. San and Laz overflow with more than enough talent and energy to get kids from one to 91 to sing and clap away their winter blues.
Here you will experience symphonic stories, GEMINI favorites, which include original and traditional songs and stories from several cultures and musical traditions, and (as we said before), some "smoking hot" violin playing by the Slomovits family. In a concert that celebrates the fun, warmth, and humor of family life and shares it with their audiences, it is the perfect introduction to classical music for young listeners. According to an article in the Detroit News, "If the Pied Piper had been twins, odds are he would have been Gemini."
GEMINI has dazzled YSO audiences in previous concerts, one of many collaborations that speak to YSO's drive to share its passion for music through innovative programming, creative collaboration, and arts advocacy. YSO actively contributes to the music appreciation and education of its musicians, organizational members and audience.
Tickets for the February 19th concert, which begins at 3:30pm, cost $12 for adults; $6 for students with ID, children 12 and under, and seniors 65 and over; $30 for a family of four or more. Washtenaw Community College (WCC) students are admitted free, with student ID. Towsley Auditorium at WCC is located at 4800 E. Huron River Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 458105.
The Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1999 and immediately began concentrating on educational efforts, sponsoring youth concerto competitions to showcase talented young musicians. Concert seasons generally include at least one concert with an area youth or school group. Prior collaborations include the Plymouth Canton Choirs, the young bluegrass trio "Cats and the Fiddler," and the Washtenaw County Community College Jazz Ensemble.
